Caves Branch Tubing

One of the most popular things to do in Belize is cave tubing. This fun, relatively safe adventure activity takes you to the spiritual center of the ancient Maya, all while floating on inner tubes!

Caves in Belize History

Historically, caves were very important for the culture and religion of the ancient Maya of Belize. Caves were used as ceremonial sites, as evidenced by the multitude of relics such as pottery shards. Today, the most famous cave in Belize is Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM). Visitors are welcome to embark on a tour of ATM Cave, but this all-day adventure can be too strenuous for some. If you would like to explore Belize caves in more leisurely, relaxing manner, cave tubing is a great way to do so.

Caves Branch Tour

Dubbed the “River of Caves,” this tour spans over 7 miles underground. The tour begins with some moderate trekking through the jungle to reach the river. You enter the cave by floating on inner tubes and only a headlamp to guide your way. This long tour includes floating past giant stalagmites and stalactites looming above, as well as many underground waterfalls. But the main highlight is the crystal cathedral and underground spiritual center of the ancient Maya.

What’s Included

The tour includes a guide, inner tube, headlamp, helmet, and life vest to keep you afloat. Lunch and water are also included. Caves Branch tubing costs roughly $95 USD per adult. If you’re interested in an adrenaline-pumping zip lining tour afterward, this can be added for an extra fee.

If you’re afraid of the dark or are uncomfortable spending time in the water, this may not be the tour for you. It is also recommended that children be at least 10 years old to participate.

What to Wear

Since you will be partially submerged in water during the tubing adventure, you should dress accordingly. Lightweight clothing made of quick dry material is recommended, as well as sturdy, protective footwear. You may also want to bring a dry change of clothes and a waterproof camera.
